This film is a blatantly sexual accused and frank look at the people, their relationships and how sex is intertwined in it. The treatment is both sophisticated yet incredibly naive, even while showing very intense sexual scenes, did not sugarcoat or judge, but only explored in a way that most American cinema is afraid to do so. It's like one of the actors says, "Voyeurism is participation" (or something close to it). Simply by viewing it, that actors explore interconnected relationships and hear their stories of how we care about them and acknowledge their humanity bruises on ourselves, our friends and our neighbors (or at least as I witnessed my window) Somewhat close in spirit to "The Dreamers," but with a dash of neurotic comedy. Not as slapstick as "Another gay movie," but with the same laugh out loud, pee in your pants humor that had the audience roaring in both fantasize and laughter at the same time.
I think this is the first film I've seen that is able to depict graphic sex in a positive way cheerful. This film is about people looking for connection in our world that is increasingly artificial. While the graph, it is difficult for me to think that someone would not be able to cope with seeing sex in this movie, especially because we are exposed to so much violence in other films that have little redeeming value, but somehow it seems that no problems as many people. The only flaw I've seen in the film is that it's a little too aware. Some of the dialogue in which characters discuss is the integration of feelings, but generally the feelings are welcome ones.
Last night I went to see a screening of Shortbus, John Cameron Mitchell's follow-up to Hedwig and the Angry Inch and was the most joyous movie experience I've had in ages. There is something bold and exciting happening here ... something that perhaps has not been seen in American cinema since the 60s. Shortbus is a laugh-a-high-funny and sink into your seat, to hide her tears sad. There is a message of "acceptance" and "all in this together" to be received ... You just have to want to listen (and which, in itself, this is a problem to a large number of moviegoers who just can not stop inches) The explicit sex is not just a trick ... it really feels like this is an honest place with these characters. It's playful, when it should be, angry at other times, sometimes is tentative and safe. Like the how it is in real life (unlike porn), which is why it works so well.
